Managing ADHD
Devon’s group focused on managing ADHD will help patients expand and refine their executive function skills including: time management, organizational skills, impulse control, and emotion regulation. Each of these skills are imperative for ADHD students to know and implement into both their school and everyday lives. Time management skills that patients will learn in this group will allow them to be more productive, focus more effectively and get more things done. It is important to identify distractions and pick out solutions to help your mind get in the right space to complete work. Most students don’t recognize how their workspace and organization impacts productivity. But, if they had a plan of what they were going to accomplish as well as a dedicated workspace, it can boost their study time and keep them informed about tasks and deadlines. The other two executive function skills center around internal effectiveness more so than school or focusing. Impulse control is an important skill to learn at any point in life as it will help you better manage your behaviors and subside negative behaviors or poor choices. Emotion regulation is another substantial skill to learn and this group will help patients practice, in the group setting, how to most effectively regulate your own emotions. This group follows a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) format which helps individuals with these executive functioning skills and learn how to modify detrimental thought patterns into more positive ones, which changes how a person acts.
Devon is holding a twelve-week ‘managing ADHD’ group this upcoming September (2019) meeting once a week. Ideally, the group will be made up of six to eight patients of the same age range.
